Around London

Suggested Level – A1 elementary
Objectives:
-         to broaden pupils’ knowledge about the sights of London;
-         to develop reading, listening and free speaking skills on the topic “London”;
-         to improve skills in pronunciation;
-         to encourage pupils to communicate in English.
Equipment: the book “This is Britain” (Level 2. Oxford), DVD-recorder, a map of London, thematic pictures, cards.
Procedure
1. Introduction
T: Good morning, children! I’m glad to see you. Take your seats. Today we are having a special lesson. It’s a video lesson. The topic of our lesson is “Around London”.
2. Warming-up
T: We study English and I am sure that all of you would like to visit Great Britain. Am I right? You have already learned much about Great Britain, its geographical position, industry, customs and traditions. Let’s find out what you know about London. Answer some questions, please.
Questions:
1.     What is the capital of the UK?
2.     What does Great Britain consist of?
3.     What is the population of London?
4.     What river does London stand?
5.     What places of interest are there in London?
6.     Where does the Queen live when she is in London?
7.     What name is given to the clock of the Houses of Parliament?
3. Main Part
Before watching the video
T: Listen to the DVD-recorder and repeat the words:
London Shops
Oxford Street
Piccadilly Circus
Harrods
Buckingham Palace
The Changing of the Guard
Trafalgar Square
Nelson’s Column
The London Eye
Big Ben
The Tower of London
Tower Bridge
The Underground

T: What other famous places or buildings do you know in London?
Expected answer: Houses of Parliament, London Zoo, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Madame Tussaud’s, Regent’s Park, Green Park, Hyde Park.

Watching the video
Pupils watch the video and do the task “Watch, order and match”. Pupils number the pictures 1- 8 in the order they see them on the video. They match each photo to the correct name by drawing a line. Then pupils compare their answers with a partner and check them with the teacher.

Answers: a Big Ben, b Tower Bridge, c Buckingham Palace, d tube map,
                e sightseeing bus, f taxi, g London Eye, h train station.

T: I’ll give you cards. Your task is to match a phrase in the left-hand column to a phrase in the right-hand column, by drawing a line. Then compare your answers with your partners. (Pupils watch the video again and after check their answers with the teacher).

 Answers:
1.     Harrods is a big department store.
2.     The London Eye is a big wheel.
3.     Hamleys is a toy shop.
4.     The Prime Minister and the government work in the Houses of Parliament.
5.     That’s Buckingham Palace. The Queen lives there.
6.     Nelson’s Column is a famous monument in Trafalgar Square.
7.     That’s Tower Bridge. It’s next to the Tower of London.
8.     Oxford Street and Piccadilly Circus are very busy.
9.     And that’s Green Park next to the palace.



After watching the video
T: As we have seen, London has a lot of interesting places to visit. And of course there must be some ways of getting around the town.  Could you name me the ways of getting around London which you saw in video?
 Expected answer: bus, taxi, tube, boat.
T: What is London Underground called? (Tube)
     What colour are most London buses? (Red)
T: Read the dialogue and complete it with words from the word bank. (Then pupils read the dialogue in roles).

Answers: tickets, please, four, children, two, forty, you, upstairs.


 T: Imagine that you are in Trafalgar Square and you would like to visit Buckingham Palace. Ask your partner how to get there. Make up a short dialogue.
Example: -Excuse me, how could I get to Buckingham Palace?
-         Go straight on. Turn right and you will see the Tower of London. Go straight ahead. Then it’s on your left. You can’t miss it.
-         Thank you.


(Pupils work in pairs. They make up short dialogues and read them). 
T: Read out the questions. Answer each question for your country and the UK, by drawing a tick or across.

Your home assignment is to write a short message about places of interest in London.
